Written by Katie DiCamillo, Illustrated by Chris Van Dusen
I have been enthralled by Chris Van Dusen’s illustrating style since I checked out The Circus Ship from the library several years ago. His illustrations are vibrant and lively and detailed. I had heard of the Mercy Watson series on blogs and podcasts, but never sought to bring one home until I saw them in person! It was the illustrations that caught my eye, that familiar color and style known to me from The Circus Ship.
I am so glad that we finally entered the world of Deckawoo Drive because these books are FUN. Mercy Watson to the Rescue by Kate DiCamillo is the first in a series of early chapter books about a pig named Mercy. She is a porcine wonder, according to her owners at least, Mr. and Mrs. Watson.

Summary: In this book, Mr. and Mrs. Watson run into some trouble while sleeping at night. Mercy gets into bed with them after becoming scared, but their bed on the second floor just wasn’t made to hold two people AND a pig. After a dream about toast, Mercy runs off in search of a snack. Along the way we meet Eugenia and Baby Lincoln, the elderly sisters that live next door. Antics ensue, and the Fire Department shows up!
Discussion Points & Conflict: None. This book is pure fun!
Recommended: I would recommend this as an early chapter book for emerging readers. The text is large and well spaced. Each chapter is only a few pages. There are big, bright illustrations on every page. I would also recommend this as a read aloud for pre-school ages and on up!
